Flood Survival Kit

Do you live in an area in which the waters tend to rise during various times of the year? Perhaps you live close to the ocean and have seen epic waves along the shoreline. What would happen if the waters rose so high that a flood occurred? Do you have a Flood Survival Kit on hand and ready if this type of disaster happened?

We have seen a number of natural water related disasters occur all over the world within the last decade. The numbers of these annual events, the numbers of lives lost, the extensive amount of property damage and the ever increasing pollution of that water continues to increase. In every disaster, no one was prepared.

Is it time consuming to be prepared? No, but getting ready can be. However, being prepared is a huge step towards staying alive during any type of disaster so the time is well spent.

What can you do? You can become educated about where you live and consider what type of emergencies could possibly occur. Think about each probable event and what you would need to survive it.

If you own a boat, you should have a survival kit already on board. Not just because you want to prepared for a possible flood but because you are a boat owner. However, if you don’t own a flotation device, you should have a survival kit ready to grab in the event a flood warning is given and you can leave without wasting any time hunting down things you want to take with you.

You can buy these special kits or you can make your own. If you buy one, you have saved yourself a lot of time and energy completing this task. Purchasing a survival kit gives you the basic gear you may/will need and then you can add to it to personalize the kit for you and your family’s needs.

If you decide to create your own kit, start with the basic life necessities and go from there. Not only will you need “things” to get you through a flood disaster but you should have knowledge of how to physically survive one and what other non-materialistic things you should consider. By this I mean know how to shut off the electricity/gas to your home or be sure that all extra food/emergency supplies you have on hand are above the water level.

The basic gear that should be included in your personal/family’s Flood Survival Kit is very similar to that for any other disaster. Items such as: non-perishable food, water, first aid kit, personal hygiene supplies, flashlight and batteries, batter or hand-crank radio, cash, whistle, cell phone with charger (preferably solar powered) are just some of the necessary gear you should have in your kit. If there is someone with special needs and/or you have pets, please don’t forget to include items they will need.

In regards to knowledge, you should above all be aware that Mother Nature is more powerful than you may think. As part of flood education, you will learn that it only takes 6 inches of water to knock you off your feet or move your car in a direction who wish you weren’t moving in. Do not walk through unknown water and in areas where there are down power lines. Never drink or even touch, if possible, flood waters as they can be contaminated. You would need a source of clean water.

One other item to include is a copy of your home owner’s insurance policy and hopefully you carry flood insurance if you live in an area that often sees high water levels. Keep it in a water tight packet within your kit. This document and other basic gear, to keep you safe and alive during a flood, should be included in your Flood Survival Kit.
