Survival Seeds

Growing up, did your family have a garden and if so did you ever consider why? Are you concerned with what is in the food you eat today? Have you considered preparing for the future in the event that your current food sources are no longer available? One way you can begin this preparation process is by obtaining what is called Survival Seeds.

You may consider yourself one who is not the greatest gardener. However, with some practice and education you can grow your own plants from seed. If you do want to start now but don’t have the space, consider container gardening or even growing seeds on your windowsill.

Survival Seeds – A Must

Our global food supply is continuously changing and unfortunately for the worse. The government is adding things to our foods that are not healthy for us. The planet’s human population is constantly growing and the area of land itself that can be tilled to grow crops and raise meat is drastically decreasing.

We, both as an individual and as a society, must change our habits. Our bad habits of selfishness and wastefulness which is causing great harm to the only planet that we have. By starting with ourselves first, we can begin to learn and grow to achieve a greater good for all.

We must learn to not rely on the government to supply our food otherwise we will lose – everything. You and I can learn to be self-sustained if we try; we must begin this process and we can do it too. And we can with seeds.

Before choosing your seeds, there are a number of criteria one should consider first. Several questions that should be of concern are: where will you grow the seeds, do you have sufficient space and will the seeds/plants be able to receive the proper amount of nutrients (e.g.: sun, water) to grow properly? You should consider the region you live in. You should also consider what foods you and your family like and will those plants produce a sufficient amount of food from one harvest until the next?

Typically, you can buy seeds at your local home improvement store in the spring. You can always order Survival Seeds in bulk and/or in packets off of the Internet and you can also harvest your seeds from the food you are currently eating. However, you must ensure that the seeds are of the highest quality possible.

It is best to obtain seeds that are not a hybrid and that are non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organism). This way you know that the foods your will be growing are healthy from the very first harvest and for your future harvests as well. Keep in mind that your first harvest may not be what you had intended, but realize that you have learned from that harvest and necessary adjustments will be made for the next.

Having knowledge of each different planting cycle will also help you choose which seeds to purchase. If you are unsure, ask questions. If you don’t ask, you can’t learn. You may want to team up with a neighbor and work together on a community garden. This will not only benefit your relationship but your harvest may be much larger than anticipated.

Some of the suggested basic Survival Seeds are (based on yield quantities): barley, beans, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, corn, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, wheat, bell peppers, melon, okra, onion, garlic, peanuts, peas, peppers, potatoes, radish, pumpkin, spinach, squash, tomato and turnips. Also consider seeds to grow fruit and herbs like basil and parsley.

The seeds you include don’t all have to be for food you eat. Clover and Hairy Vetch, for example, are considered crop cover seeds which loosen the soil and provides nitrogen for next crop. Any leftovers make a quality mulch and can also be fed to livestock. Also consider seeds for other plant life such as trees (lumber), flowers (pollination) and other natural plant life.

Even if you aren’t too concerned about the future at this point, consider starting a small garden. Take a try at growing your own lettuce, radishes and carrots for a wonderful salad at mealtime. However, Survival Seeds are to be highly regarded as the key to your future.
